Reel in Blackfin Thrills: Offshore Tactics Shine in West Palm
I headed out with Ross and their crew for a morning of offshore fishing from West Palm Beach, FL. We launched from Riviera Beach City Marina at 7:30 am on a partly cloudy June day, with the possibility of strong storms looming. The conditions were typical for early summer in South Florida - warm and humid with a light chop on the water as we made our way offshore. As a guide with Tuna Wahoo Charters, I was excited to lead this 4 Hour Fishing Adventure and show our guests some of the fantastic offshore action Palm Beach has to offer. Anglers targeting snook in West Palm Beach should focus on the Intracoastal Waterway's dock lights and bridge pilings at night, using live mullet or large soft plastics. During the day, peacock bass can be found in local canals and freshwater lakes, responding well to topwater lures or bright-colored jigs. Offshore, kingfish and sailfish are prevalent along the edge of the Gulf Stream, typically in 120-180 feet of water, with live bait or trolling spoons proving effective.
Once offshore, we employed a variety of techniques to target pelagic species. We started with trolling, which is an effective method for covering water and locating active fish. As we moved deeper, we switched to deep dropping to target bottom-dwelling species. We also set up some kite fishing rigs, a popular technique in South Florida for presenting baits on the surface. Our efforts paid off when we hooked into some blackfin tuna, a species well-suited for the offshore waters of West Palm Beach due to their preference for warm, tropical waters and their aggressive feeding habits.
